Simply put, Internet Marketing is selling stuff online for profit! Not only can anyone do it, but thousands are doing it that never thought they could. How successful you will become, is much like anything in life. You must work hard and you must work hard at the right stuff.
First of all, you need to know the number one rule of internet marketing. Get loyal customers – this is certainly nothing new in any marketing arena. The typical way to do this is offer something decent, for free. In order to get the free item, you get their email address in return. You ask them to sign up for your free product by supplying their name and email address. Once you have their email address you are on your way to forming a list of email addresses that represent your future ‘loyal customers’. In online marketing terms this is known as an ‘opt-in’ list. You do not want to ‘buy’ a list of email addresses as this is spamming and you will not get ‘loyal’ customers, you will get ‘annoyed’ people.

I walked out the Performance Marketing Alliance (PMA) Q&A session at Affiliate Summit East 2008 in Boston, MA just a few hours ago, full of frustration and a bit of anger. I had to calm myself down first before I started writing this post. The subject is important and emotional for most of us, but emotions will not solve our problems and only make it harder to come to agreements and finding solutions that benefit every single one of us.

Affiliate Marketing: The Shirt Off My Back
Here I am at the end of day two of AffiliateSummit East 2008, back in Boston after quite a number of years and the keynote is not even for another eight hours. Yes, the show really does start two days before the keynote kicks off. Actually, it might be three days. I arrived early Saturday morning and I missed a few unofficial gatherings on Friday. Note to self: arrive in Vegas extra early for ASW ‘09.

the rights to use – these are available online if you look hard enough, and of course even on my site! Your future loyal customer will get good value from the ebook and in turn can use it on their site as well. Some marketers offer a free newsletter that is full of relevant material. Other marketers offer free mini-courses that are typically sent by email for 7-21 days in a row. Others offer combinations of these items. So, if you are interested in starting an internet marketing site – use one of these ideas to get going – cuz anyone can do this by building a simple website offering a free gift. All you need is a signup section on your website – you can learn more about this by reading about ‘autoresponders’ that will automatically send out your free information to them and at the same time, gather their emails for future messages back to them.
Then you want to continue to service your growing opt-in list, by giving more free and unexpected items. In this way you develop trust and they look forward to getting an email from you rather than deleting it before reading it!
Once your loyal customers realize that your material is relevant and good for them, you can offer them more great stuff, but at a cost. The free mini-course, for example, might show your customers that the full size course you offer would be well worth the money you are asking for it. And, make sure it is – never rip off a loyal customer! If you don’t yet have a great product, then you can be an affiliate to someone who has a great product. In fact many prefer to sell other people’s products. Just make sure, like I have, that you truly connected with a marketer who offers great products or services.
So, in a nutshell, that gets you into the Internet Marketing world. Then you can get better at creating more effective websites, autoresponses etc. You can also start to learn how to promote your newly developed website so that you can find these loyal customers. There are many great marketing mentors out there that will help you with all of these issues – I was lucky and found a great one on the first attempt.
You will need to believe that you can do this, then find a great mentor to help you along and before long you will be selling ‘stuff’ online and making profit – many marketers make millions and you could too if you learn from the best.
